  1. Hey, Cory, thanks for the detailed post. It provides a lot of useful information. I have always wanted to buy one power generator for my house as we have quite a big backyard and sometimes to running the power cable all the way across the backyard is quite annoying. Can you give me some recommendations on where to keep the generator when we do not use it? Is it safe to keep it in the garden shed? I worry when the weather’s too hot, it can affect the generator.

    • Hot weather can affect your generator so storing it in a garden shed would not be a good idea unless it was in a shaded place and was well ventilated. A good place to store it would be in a garage if it’s not too hot and if it is dry. There are other things that should be done if you are storing it for long periods of time. Any further questions I will be happy to answer them.

  2. Hi; The full description of the 5940 Generator that you have given will prove helpful to many households as a Stand by unit is important to have in every home. We all know about Power cuts.

There are times when we have a deadline to finish some work on the computer, when comes the Power-cut. Time to use the Generator. As also there are common disasters that come uninvited and disrupt the Power supply.

I consider the 5940 generator as a necessary machine for every household in the Land.

    • Thanks for the comments. The Generac 5940 GP generator is a wise choice in a portable generator.

  3. We have been looking at getting a generator for a while now as living in South Africa we get more power cuts than a lot of countries. It would just be great to be able to keep things like freezers going, and maybe a little TV at night.

The only thing that has put us off so far are the noise levels, which can be quite irritating. But this is the first time I have seen them come with sound proof boxes, so they are starting to improve in this regard. I will definitely be taking a closer look at this 5940 model.

  4. Cory, great review on a good piece of equipment.  I would like to know if it comes in gas and diesel models.   Would one be more efficient over the other.  Also, I wasn’t sure if the generator was the 120 volt type or 230 volts.  You mentioned 230 volts in the domestic use.  I am thinking of upgrading from the 3500 watt generator I have, which is 120 volts, runs on gas, and is nominally able to run the 120 volt compressor I use when I’m not near a plug in.  In cold weather the generator I have has a hard time starting the compressor.  Thanks for the info!

    • Hi Steve, 120 volts 240 volts with AC current. This one just uses gasoline. Recommended gas to use is unleaded with a minimum 85 octane rating. If I can answer any other questions feel free to ask.

  5. Hello Cory,

Your review of the Generac 5940 GP6500 6500 is very informational.

I wonder how this generator compares to other brand generators of the same specifications.

I like the way you have the Pinterest link available with the product pics but I noticed that when I click the Pinterest link it takes me to many other generators and different retailers where they can be purchased. Is this intentional because I notice your link to Amazon to buy this generator at the bottom of your Review page. When I clicked through the Pinterest page for the same model generator, it takes me to Walmart where I see a lower price!

You may wish to get your product pics from another source to avoid competing retailers.

I’m just trying to give my honest unbiased opinion.
